CNBC reports on a trend that’s developed during 2021, wherein travelers hedge against uncertainty by booking more than one trip for the same time period, knowing that they can cancel any or all of them for free. By booking trips to different areas, the traveler can wait until closer to the travel date to decide which destination suits the current situation including travel restrictions or their own comfort level. Spokespersons from several companies were quoted as observing a rise in the trend, speculating that it was a natural result of the industry’s extremely flexible cancellation policies. And while the higher rates of cancellations are not helpful to hotels, airlines, or cruise lines, the hypothetical increase in the probability that a traveler would definitely execute at least one of the stacked trips was possibly a net gain overall.
