CNBC reports that the first large-scale shipment of a COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Chicago from Brussels, marking the start of a global distribution process that is expected to dominate travel news in 2021. Although the Pfizer vaccine has been shown to be 95% effective in clinical trials, it still hasn’t received final US FDA approval.
The shipment to Chicago has not been confirmed by Pfizer, but insider sources who confirmed the shipment believe it’s intended as a test run for the large-scale logistics operation required for the rollout of a vaccine that requires a storage temperature of -94F. Other promising vaccines such as the one by Moderna require only normal refrigeration for storage, suggesting that Pfizer needs to prove its ability to distribute its vaccine if it intends to compete for the market.
