The Straits Times reports that the proposed, postponed, and postponed-again travel bubble between Singapore and Hong Kong has finally been canceled permanently, after nearly a year of failed starts. Singapore’s Transport Minister S. Iswaran said on Thursday that “Our strategies differ, with Singapore now taking steps to becoming a Covid-19-resilient nation,” politely referring to the two cities’ divergence in approaches to the pandemic. Earlier this year the Singapore clarified that its strategy was to reach herd immunity through vaccination, and then begin to treat COVID-19 more like a conventional flu. Singapore announced on Thursday that arrivals from Hong Kong and Macau need only a single negative test to be permitted entry. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong authorities have extended their quarantine requirements from medium-risk places including Singapore, as the government indicates its intention to stick to their zero-infection policy.
