TravelDaily Media reports that a newly requested state of emergency in Tokyo and other cities involved in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics have again put the Games in doubt. Governors of Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama are asking the central government to declare another state of emergency after more than 3000 new cases on Sunday, including 816 in Tokyo. The already postponed Olympics and Paralympics are still scheduled in the summer of 2021, and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach stated “We can only thank our Japanese partners and friends for their great commitment and their determination, which is absolutely in line with our commitment and our determination to organize these games in a safe and secure way for all the participants and to make these Olympic Games fit for the post-coronavirus world,” in his New Year’s message posted on the IOC’s official website.
