After a record 4.6 million people visited in 2019, generating 1.5 percent of Israel’s GDP, a total lockdown last year caused financial hardship on the many businesses that run on tourism money especially near Israel’s famous ancient sites. After a recent surge in Delta-variant cases, the wide administration of a third booster vaccine has put the infection rate under control, allowing the government to announce what it calls a “partial reopening.”
